"do it" is a unique exhibition that centers on the notion of interpretation as an artistic principle. Starting with a manual of written, do-it-yourself instructions compiled from internationally renowned artists, the idea is for other artists to carry out the instructions and re-imagine the procedures from their own individual perspectives. CAA Awards MFA Fellowships to Five Artists

CAA has awarded five 2010–11 Professional-Development Fellowships in the Visual Arts to artists enrolled in MFA programs across the United States. The organization has also recognized the work of five additional artists with honorable mentions.

CAA will award each fellow a one-time grant of $5,000. The fellows and honorable mentions will also receive complimentary one-year CAA memberships and free registrations for the 2011 Annual Conference in New York. In addition, Barbara Nesin, president of the CAA Board of Directors, will formally introduce and recognize the ten artists during the presentation of the 2011 Awards for Distinction, which takes place on Thursday evening, February 10, 6:00–7:30 PM, in the Grace Rainey Rogers Auditorium of the Metropolitan Museum of Art.

CAA will publish full profiles of all ten artists later this month, with images of their recent work. Initiated in 1993, the fellowship program helps student artists and art historians bridge the gap between their graduate studies and professional careers. North American Graduate Art Survey

Gregory Hayes' Primary Array #19 and Primary Array #56, have been selected to be part of the 2011 North American Graduate Art Survey. Receiving over 725 entries from 90 different schools representing 35 U.S. states and 5 Canadian provinces, Juror Bartholomew Ryan selected just 52 works to be on display!

University of Minnesota’s Department of Art is hosting its second North American Graduate Art Survey, a juried international exhibition of North American graduate student artwork. The exhibition will be open to all media, and to all current MFA candidates in Canada, Mexico and The United States. NAGAS, organized solely by graduate students for graduate students, will explore a diverse range of styles and points of view, representing the different cultures and backgrounds of emerging artists throughout North America.

NAGAS seeks to promote awareness of artwork being produced in graduate programs throughout North America. Our event not only promotes graduate art students and their professional goals, but also offers opportunities for the University of Minnesota community to access art outside of our area.

Gregory Hayes:Re-Seeing New Works

Be prepared to think. What seems traditionally simple is deceptively complex. Hayes, who did his undergraduate work at the Rocky Mountain College of Art and Design, was influenced by Clark Richert, considered Colorado's high priest of pattern painting. Here, Hayes chooses to address the grid. His methodology is to use a windowpane grid, then uses colors, employs mathematical formulas, and constructs a new grid that becomes a work of both precision and mood. RULE Gallery Champions Young Artists in 4.0

It's no secret to those in the know in Denver that Clark Richert is an influential artist. From his early days in the experimental avant garde project known as Drop City to his large mathematical paintings and recent digital projections featured in the Denver Biennial, Richert is a staple of the art world in the Rocky Mountain West. But his influence in the classroom at Rocky Mountain College of Art & Design may be his most important impact.

Richert is represented by Robin Rule and her Rule Gallery in Denver, and some have criticized the artist and his dealer for the current exhibition of young student artists entitled 4.0.

A little networking and encouragement can go a long way. Consider Robert Storr (Dean of the Yale Art School), and all of the artists and curators he has championed who have gone on to launch successful careers. Most recently, Sarah Lewis, a student of his and colleague curated

Gregory Hayes: Re-Seeing New Works is an elegant and very grown-up solo on display at Rule Gallery. It showcases the recent efforts by Hayes, an emerging artist who lives in New York, where he's in grad school. But he also has a Colorado connection, having done his undergraduate work at the Rocky Mountain College of Art and Design in Lakewood, and this makes him part of a battalion of noteworthy artists who have gone to this school.

Many of these RMCAD-ets studied with Clark Richert, the Colorado dean of pattern painting, whose style of choice is hard-edged abstraction. These former students have embraced Richert's aesthetic and conceptual insights and used them as stepping-off points for their own approaches. Besides Hayes, Richert protegés include Bruce Price, Jason Hoelscher and Karen McLanahan.
